過去五六年，智能手機（Smartphone）操作系統市場一直由 Symbian 及 微軟的 Windows Mobile 為主導。自從蘋果在 2007 年推出基於 Unix 類 iPhone OS 系統的 iPhone 以來，智能手機操作系統市場競爭漸趨白熱化。去年谷歌（Google）推出了 Android 手機操作系統供各大手機廠商使用，今年 Palm 亦推出了她的意圖復興之作－－Palm Pre，並連帶推出了同樣基於 Linux 的 WebOS 平台。

一直擁抱著 Symbian S60 陣營的全球最大手機生產商諾基亞（Nokia），眼見 S60 平台與 Windows Mobile 一樣，因功能、效能及架構等不合時宜而被各新世代智能手機操作系統蠶食自己的市場份額，當然不會坐以待斃。去年，諾基亞先後將 Symbian 基金會收為己有兼開放源碼，並推出了支援觸控支援的 S60 5th Edition 平台以及在該平台運行的幾款手機（5530/5800 Xpress Music 及 N97 / N97 Mini 等）。此外，諾基亞亦收購了 Qt 用戶界面開發框架的 Trolltech 公司，並將其固有的 Internet Tablet 系列以 Linux 為基礎的 Maemo 系統加以改良，延伸至支援 HSPA 數據網絡、高像素相機以及手機通話及短訊功能，推出了配備新版 Maemo 5 的 N900 智能手機，於歐美市場發售，實行 S60 與 Maemo 雙線同時發展，與眾智能手機平台爭一日之長短。

簡介

早兩日我在這裡發表了 Chromium OS 在華碩 Eee PC 901 的實機示範片段和試用感受，不少網友看後均蠢蠢欲動，希望也能一試谷歌（Google）這個劃時代概念的操作系統。有見及此，XEPC.org 的 lazyfai （輝哥）慷慨地把他打包製作的 Chromium OS 映像檔案上載給大家試用。大家除了可以以此製作開機「手指」或 SDHC 卡試用外，輝哥更加入 Eee PC 901/1000(H) 系列的 Ralink 無線網卡驅動程式，加上其本已內置的 Atheros 網卡系列的驅動程式，令這套 Chromium OS 完整地支援 Eee PC 7/9/10 系列網本電腦的無線上網功能！

這裡我會為大家介紹如何在 Windows 環境下，利用輝哥的映像檔案製作出一隻能隨插即用的 Chromium OS USB 「手指」或 SDHC 卡，讓 Eee PC 及其他品牌網本電腦的用家，都能實機試用 Chromium OS。

早在 2009 年 7 月 7 日，谷歌（Google）已在其官方網誌公佈即將推出供網本（Netbook）及筆記簿電腦使用的 Chrome OS 操作系統，並表示新系統將為使用者提供一個既簡單、又快捷的雲端服務使用體驗。在七月中小妹有份參與的一集數碼縱橫 Digital XY / 微腦狂熱 UMPC Fever 的 Audio Blog裡，我也與幾位網友一同跟大家分享了我們對 Chrome OS 的一些看法。

到了 11 月 19 日，Chrome OS 的首個開放源碼版本 Chromium OS 千呼萬喚始出來。世界各地不少網友已第一時間下載該系統的源碼自行編譯，並釋出VMWare / VirtualBox 適用的映像檔案給大家試用。今次有幸請到本地 Linux 專家、XEPC.org 主持人 lazyfai，給我編譯了一張可用來開機的SDHC 卡－－利用它，我成功在華碩第一部 Atom 網本電腦 Eee PC 901 上使用 Chromium OS，實機感受一下這個為網本電腦度身訂造的操作系統究竟是甚麼葫蘆賣甚麼藥！

一直以來，隨身攜帶的 Nokia N810 「網板電腦（Internet Tablet）」以及間中攜帶的華碩 Eee PC 901 都得靠 Wifi 才能上網。雖然我也可以以藍牙形式接駁手機使用 3.5G 網絡，但我的手機上網計劃每月只有 50 MB 是免費的，手機無限上網計劃又異常昂貴。本來各網絡商每月二百元左右的「手指」無限上網計劃是很吸引的，但「手指」只可用於 PC 架構上，我的 Nokia N810 卻無福消受。

I carry my Nokia N810 Internet Tablet with me all the time and bring my Eee PC 901 with me occasionally. Both devices support Wifi for Internet connection only. Although it is still possible for me to connect them to my mobile phone's 3.5G network via Bluetooth, the mobile phone network plan that I'm currently using only offers 50MB of data transfer per month, and unlimited Internet usage plans for mobile phones are unreasonably expensive here in Hong Kong. Yes, we can still easily enjoy unlimited Internet usage with a 3.5G HSPA USB modem at the price of around HK$200 per month; but this is for PCs only, and it is nearly impossible for me to get USB modems working on my Nokia N810.

早前網上行推出了「Pocket Wifi」服務，一部細小的華為 E583X 就可讓用家同一時間把 3.5G 網絡連線同時分享給最多 5 部 Wifi 裝置；可是該計劃月費達到每月 $328（這還是網上行客戶價，非網上行客戶要 $488），而且眾所周知的是電盈 3G 網絡的質素和網絡覆蓋都不甚理想，他們提供的 華為 E583X 又有「鎖卡」，所以本來「心大心細」的我，最後也不予考慮。

Around a month ago Netvigator launched its "Pocket Wifi" plan that offers unlimited Internet usage at an expensive price of HK$328 (for Netvigator users only; for non-Netvigator users, it's HK$488 per month). The plan includes a free Huawei E583X device that allows simultaneous Wifi connections launched by up to 5 devices to share a common 3.5G connection. However, considering that PCCW's 3G network quality and coverage aren't that good, and the fact that their Huawei E583X is in fact SIM locked, their "Pocket Wifi" plan is therefore removed from my list of considerations.

近月外國 Novatel 推出的 Mifi 也引來不少媒體的報導和網友們的注意，不過它賣超過二千元的價格，卻又令我「望機輕嘆」。

Recently, Novatel's Mifi has caught a lot attention from many media and Internet users. But with the price tag over HK$2000, I wouldn't consider it either.

直至前陣子上網看見 HKEPC 介紹了 Zalip 支援 3.5G 的無線 Draft N 路由器，發現它支援以鋰離子電池供電，而且還支援市面不少 3.5G 「手指」，最重要的是它只賣七百多元！它的功能甚至比華為 E583X 和 Novatel Mifi 有過之而無不及呢！

Last month I read a review from HKEPC that introduced me the Zalip Draft N router which supports using 3.5G USB modem as WAN connection. What's so amazing is that this router can actually be powered up by a Lithium-ion battery that is compatible to Fujifilm cameras' and is easily obtainable. This extremely portable router supports majority of 3.5G USB modems, and more importantly, it is selling at the price of just HK$770. What's more, Zalip's router offers greater flexibility and features over the solutions offered by Huawei and Novatel.

就是這樣，我便去旺電三樓某店用 $770 把它買回家。我又把先前從網上行得來的華為 E180 「手指」解鎖，並去數碼通申請一個每月 $188 (+$12) 的 7.2Mbps 無限上網計畫（只出 SIM 卡，兩年約），現在我便可以享受隨處無限上網、與朋友聚會時一同分享上網的樂趣了！

So that's how I bought mine from Mongkok Computer Centre at HK$770. To get started, I unlocked my Netvigator's Huawei E180 USB modem and joined the Smartone-Vodafone 7.2Mbps unlimited usage plan at HK$188(+$12) per month (SIM card only, 2-year contract). Now I can get online with both my N810 and my Eee PC anywhere in Hong Kong, and enjoy the moments when I can share my connection with friends during gatherings!

上月尾打電話到網上行，他們說可以每月多加 $18，把我家裡的數據機，換上已內置Draft N 無線路由功能的機種之餘，還可以有無限量的 PCCW Wifi 熱點服務，以及一支集 HSPA（3.5G）、WCDMA（3G） 及 Wifi 功能的華為 E180 USB 網絡「手指」（配合首月免費、隨後每日 $18 的計劃）。其實作為那台只支援 Wifi 的諾基亞 N810 的用家，我一直到想用電盈範圍最廣的 Wifi 網絡，現在既然有如此優惠我便儘管試試。

前陣子到旺角領取「手指」後，我便把它插到我的 Eee PC 裡，簡單測試一下網上行的 HSPA 網絡在本地及海外的上下載表現。

Earlier UMPC Fever / Digital XY had posted an unboxing article of S101, the Mobile Internet Device (MID) from Chinese manufacturer ZhongYi. Albeit it's made in China, the article described the ZhongYi device as an enhanced version of the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, which has attracted many readers' attention. So how's the actual performance of the device? How does it compare to my Nokia N810? With the help of UMPC Fever / DIgital XY and forum member SKY, I manage to borrow the Internet Tablet-like device to take a good look of it. 幾個月前小妹曾在這裡跟大家分享各種 GPS 全球衛星定位的應用方案，並曾以 Holux M-241 連接 Eee PC 做示範，介紹過該類 GPS 定位和記錄儀的功能。近日著名的 GPS 設備製造商、台灣的 QSTARZ 在香港的總代理，趁小妹近日出遊上海之際，特意把他們一部最新的 GPS 定位和記錄儀產品 QSTARZ BT-Q1000X 借給我來個詳細測試。今天我們就看看這台最新型號的GPS 定位和記錄儀的表現如何吧！

目前，幾乎所有的 USB 流動式儲存裝置和記憶卡，都會預先以 FAT32 檔案系統格式化，以便獲得市場佔有率達九成多的視窗操作系統的支援。FAT32 檔案系統歷史悠久，由十幾年前的視窗 95 OSR2 版本起開始支援，以取代舊有的 FAT12 和 FAT16 系統。相對於目前主流「廠機」硬碟所使用的 NTFS 檔案系統，FAT32 的結構和功能都相對簡單，也不支援視窗的檔案安全權限和壓縮等功能。然而也因為它簡單的特性，在流動式儲存裝置上應用時，速度較為理想；再加上 NTFS 系統的檔案安全權限設定是依賴某台特定電腦才能使用，所以 FAT32 就理所當然地成為流動式儲存裝置和記憶卡廠商的必然選擇。

雖然如此，FAT32 也有其限制。隨著 DVD 虛擬光碟以至高清電視錄影的流行，FAT32 每個檔案最多只容許 2^32 位元組、也就是大約 4GB 容量的限制就顯得不敷應用。微軟遂於 2006 年年尾率先在 Windows Embedded CE 6.0 推出了被人稱之為「FAT64」的全新 exFAT 檔案系統。exFAT 檔案系統把每個檔案的容量限制定為 2^64 位元組、也就是 16 EB（1 EB = 1,048,576 TB），亦容許每個資料夾可擁有超過 65,536 個檔案，足夠未來至少十年的應用。

早前 SD 卡協會宣佈了下世代的 SDXC 卡規格，選擇了微軟的 exFAT 制式作為未來 SDXC 卡的默認檔案系統。而微軟除了在 Windows Vista SP1 和 Windows 7 全面支援 exFAT 檔案系統外，早前更在他們的網站悄悄地推出了供 Windows XP 使用的 exFAT 檔案系統驅動程式（按此下載），讓用家提早為這新興的制式做好準備。

相對於 FAT32 和 NTFS，究竟這套新檔案系統在現有 SDHC 卡上表現如何？我特意在我的 Eee PC 901 上，用一片威剛為 Eee PC 推出的專用 16GB SDHC Class 6 卡進行了幾次 Windows XP Home SP3 預設的格式化動作，簡單測試一下在同一台機器、同一操作系統和同一片記憶卡上使用不同檔案系統，在使用 Atto 測速軟件下的表現，以及各檔案系統對總可用容量的影響。

自從華碩易電腦（Eee PC）一年前把全球第一部「網本」（Netbook）帶來世上以來，固態硬碟這門新技術便從不成熟的貴族玩意，以低容量低效率的切面引進尋常百姓家，成為一眾 Eee PC 和其他平價「網本」的預設儲存裝置。

Since the introduction of the world's first Netbook Asus Eee PC one year ago, the  immature-and-expensive-at-first Solid State Drives (SSD) had found its way to the cheap and developing Eee PC and netbook market by using chips of lower capacity and efficiency. 

使用固態硬碟的 Eee PC 型號，由於大多只具備 4GB - 32GB 的低容量的固態硬碟，可安裝的程式和可存放的檔案都比使用 80-160GB 硬碟版本的為少。不少用家遂自行購買 SDHC 卡進行容量補完；有部份有創意的網友更自行加裝 1.8 吋的 ZIF 界面硬碟機，甚至利用 ZIF-Compact Flash 轉接器和高容量的 Compact Flash 卡來「自製」固態硬碟！

Most Eee PC w/SSD models usually equipped with 4GB - 32GB low capacity SSDs, and hence the number of applications and files they can store would be far less than those models that equipped with 80-160GB hard disk drives. Many users therefore would end up buying SDHC cards to expand their usable storage capacity. Some other creative users got their Eee PCs modified to fit a 1.8" ZIF hard diskdrive into their little machines, while some others even home-made their SSDs by using a ZIF-Compact Flash adapter and a high capacity Compact Flash card!

然而這些補完方案仍有其不完美之處：

However, the above solutions aren't perfect:

• SDHC 卡長插在機體內未嘗不可，不過目前主流的SDHC 卡最高只達 16GB；32GB 的縱使已經推出，但售價仍然高昂，在主流市場上也未找到達到 Class 6 速度 32GB SDHC 記憶卡。而且當有需要把其他記億卡拿來讀取的時候，我們要先把長插的記憶卡拔出來，實在不太方便。再加上把記憶卡長插在機體內，會使讀卡器長期運作，增加耗電，縮短可使用的時間。
  
  
  Even it is not impractical to have SDHC card staying inside the built-in card reader all the time, the largest SDHC card you can get in mainstream market is still a 16GB one. Although 32GB SDHC has been released recently, it is still expensive and it is still rare to find a 32GB SDHC card that is at least Class 6 is speed. Morever, when you need to read another SDHC card, you will always have to pull out the original card, which is quite troublesome sometimes. Staying a SDHC card inside the built-in card reader would also consume more power from the machine, and hence result in shorter usable battery life. 

• 1.8 吋硬碟機目前價格尚算高昂，而且大多只有 4200 轉的速度，效率欠佳。部份 Eee PC 901 批次也沒有 ZIF 插位；即使有 ZIF 插位，安裝時也需要一些特別技巧才能把連接線插入，難度較高；況且改裝硬碟也喪失了抗震的原意，所以這方案只可淪為小眾玩意。
  
  While the price of 1.8" hard disk drives still remains at a very high level, most of these drives are only 4200rpm ones and that means they are considerably inefficent when compared to traditional 5400rpm notebook hard drives. ZIF slot is not found in some Eee PC 901 batches; even yours has got one, it still requires some advanced skills in order to insert the connection cable to the ZIF slot. Replacing your original SSD with a hard disk drive also sacrifices the anti-shocking advantages of SSDs. So after all, this could only be a hobbyist mod rather than a practical mod.

• ZIF-Compact Flash 轉接卡配 Compact Flash 的方案勝在夠彈性，可隨意挑選市面上眾多的 Compact Flash 卡安裝；但其敗筆也是出於其高彈性，因為不同的 Compact Flash 卡在 Eee PC 上的兼容度都有所不同，而且轉接卡多由祖國的「山寨廠」出品，質素和數據傳送穩定性都不能保證；再加上 Compact Flash 的價錢普遍比 SDHC 還高，目前最高容量也只得 32GB，所以也不太划算。
  
  The ZIF-Compact Flash adapter + Compact Flash Card solution is flexible in terms of the wide range choices of CF cards in the market; however, the cons of this solution is also come from its flexibility. Different CF cards often suffer from compatibility problems with the Eee PC hardware, and what's worse, most ZIF-CF adpaters were manufactured by unknown factories in China. Their cheap price implied that their quality and the stability of data transfer are not guaranteed. Considering the fact that the maximum capacity of CF cards found in the market is 32GB only, and the fact that most CF cards still cost more than their SDHC equivalents, this solution is far from ideal.

由於部份 Eee PC 型號，包括 701 首批 7A 批號字頭的機種、702、900、900A、901 和 1000 都備有 Mini PCI-E 介面，而且有見 Eee PC 用家對儲存空間的需求十分殷切，不少廠商如 MyDigitalSSD、Buffalo、Patriot 和 Super Talent 等，都製作了 Mini PCI-E 介面的高容量固態硬碟，讓用家可輕鬆地自行升級。日前美國記憶體品牌 Super Talent 的香港代理引入了由該廠推出的 Eee PC Mini PCI-E 介面固態硬碟卡，以每 GB 價錢比 SDHC 更便宜的價格在本地市場發售，當中包括 8GB SLC/MLC、 16GB SLC/MLC、32GB SLC/MLC 和 64GB MLC 的型號。

Because some Eee PC models, such as the first batches of 701 (with "7A" prefix in their serial no.), 702, 900, 900A, 901 and 1000, come with built-in Mini PCI-E interface, and considering the fact that many Eee PC users would like to have more storage capacity in their little machines, many memory manufacturers such as MyDigitalSSD, Buffalo, Patriot and Super Talent have recently launched their own Mini PCI-E SSD card solutions for the Eee PC market.

Among these manufacturers, here in Hong Kong the distributor of the US-brand memory manufacturer Super Talent has recently imported the Super Talent Mini PCI-E SSD cards to the Hong Kong retail market in very competitive prices --- they are cheaper even than SDHC cards in terms of GB per dollar! Available models include 8GB SLC/MLC, 16GB SLC/MLC, 32GB SLC/MLC and 64GB MLC cards.

早期華碩的 Eee PC 系列配備耗電量較高的 英特爾 賽揚-M (Celeron M) 處理器，故即使它們已備有 32.5Wh (7.4 V x 4400 mAh) 至 38.5Wh (7.4 V x 5200 mAh) 容量的鋰電池，可使用時間只維持約 2-3 小時左右。故此，不少內地的電池廠曾為第一代 Eee PC，推出了達到 77Wh (7.4 V x 10400 mAh) 的大容量的電池，以增加用戶的電腦應用時間。

 

The earliest models of ASUS Eee PC, which were released exactly one year ago, had equipped with the relatively power consuming Intel Celeron M processor. Althought the capacity of the included Lithium-ion battery ranged from 32.5Wh (7.4 V x 4400 mAh) to 38.5 Wh (7.4 V x 5200 mAh), these earlier models only offered 2 to 3 hours of general usage. To fill up the market niche, many China battery manufacturers had since then released batteries with larger capacity (up to 77 Wh, i.e. 7.4 V x 10400 mAh) to satisfy the extensive usage needs of the potential customers.

In mid-2008, ASUS released the Eee PC 901 / 1000 / 1000H series. The most notable change of this series is that they are all equipped with the Intel Atom power-saving processor, while at the same time having their batteries upgraded to 6-cell 48 Wh (7.4 x 6600mAh) ones. This has dramatically increased the number of hours of general usage of the netbooks to 5 to 7 hours --- the best built-in battery performance ever offered among all the major competitors.
